Neck, neck and shoulders

However, there are many other different causes of neck pain, such as facet-related irritation, dysfunction of the muscles of the base of the skull, and irritations caused by intervertebral discs. The most common cause of neck pain is stiffness of the muscles in the neck and shoulder area, i.e. tension neck

Vertigo in the neck

Many people experience neck pain and dizziness at the same time. However, it is not entirely simple to link neck pain and dizziness, as there is no one and specific test with which a professional can determine that dizziness originates from the neck. Often this is achieved by excluding other more serious causes of pathology.

However, it's typical for cervicogenic dizziness to be aggravated by head movements, especially after  of the dizzying sensation when turning the head, especially if the head has been stationary for a while. In addition to dizziness, the individual may experience aches in the occipital / upper neck area, which is irritated by head movements or even a positionig of a pillow.

According to some studies, up to 75% of people receive help for neck-related dizziness from conservative treatment.

At KiHy, Jussi Järvinen specializes in dizziness and is happy to look with you at what could be a good approach to ease your symptoms.

Suspense nape

Tension nipple is certainly one of the most common neck and shoulder ailments with which people seek treatment. Commonly, the ailment is caused by tense muscles in the base of the skull, neck or shoulder, as well as movement limitations in the joints. With movement restrictions, e.g. facet joints may create a slight irritability in the neck.

Tension nipples can start abruptly, although when it starts little by little it is more common.

The most common symptoms of tension nipple are as follows:

  • Neck and shoulder pain, as well as general stiffness and jolting
  • Pain in the upper nipple, as well as in the occipital region
  • With a tension nipple, dizziness and "light-headedness" may also occur
  • If the tension is high, it can cause mild shoulder plexus syndrome (TOS), with which numbness of the fingers and hands may occur.

As a treatment for tension nipples, manual therapy works well, in which various soft tissue, mobilization or manipulation techniques are used to go through the neck and facilitate the functioning of the neck. The role of exercise and physical exercises is important in similar ailments.

Shoulder plexus syndrome, or TOS

Thoracic outlet syndrome refers to a disorder in the neck and collarbone area, in which, for example, stiff muscles may put pressure on the nerves and thus lead to numbness, tingling, numbness or weakness in the hands.

Mild numbness of the hands is a fairly common ailment, and for this reason, a lot of different neurological and orthopedic tests can be found to clarify it, which can facilitate the creation of a diagnosis. With these tests, we can distinguish, for example, the herniated discs from the basic muscles of the shoulder.

Spacer problems

Disc problems and bulges in the neck work in the same way as in the back. Larger bulges lead to pressure on the nerve root and, consequently, to symptoms radiating to the hand. Smaller changes in the intervertebral discs are likely to lead to more localized neck pain.

Manual therapy can be used to treat neck pain. If radiation pain occurs in the upper extremities from the bulge of the intervertebral disc, neck manipulation therapy is not recommended. However, it must be stressed that e.g. the manipulation therapy given by naprapath is only one way to help the client and there are several other ways we have.

Whiplash or whiplash injury

The most common mechanisms of whiplash injury are car crashes, although other causes can be found, for example, in car crashes. about hockey. Symptoms may include not only pain and movement limitations, but also dizziness and difficulty concentrating. It is therefore important that after harder blows, concussions are ruled out. In the case of a whiplash injury, it is common for the structures of the neck to cause slight structural damage from the strain. However, pain and movement limitations can also occur without much damage.

For the most part, the whiplash images heal well, although for some the symptoms remain chronic.

In the event of a symptomatic whiplash injury, it is a good idea to have it checked by a doctor. In general, a return to normal life is recommended, but exercises and manual therapy, such as manipulation therapy by a chiropractor or naprapath, can be a good addition to this.
